Laparoscopic surgery involves one or more small incisions (usually only 1/4" long) rather than a large incision results in less pain,  shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.

It is a minimally invasive procedure.

  • The surgeon may recommend some invasive procedures such as colonoscopy, endoscopy, or hysteroscopy, or non-invasive imaging tests like complete blood count (CBC), blood liver enzyme tests, blood chemistry tests, electrocardiogram (EKG), and chest X-ray.
  • The doctor may advise you to stop taking blood-thinning medications and antihistamines.
  • You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything starting from the night before the surgery.
  • Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to be taken before the procedure, depending on the type of surgery.

The additional types of minimally invasive surgery are:

  • Laparoscopy: A telescope is used for the abdomen, known as laparoscopic surgery.
  • Thoracoscopy: A telescope is used for the chest, known as thoracoscopy.
  • Arthroscopy: A telescope is used for joints, known as arthroscopy.
  • Stapler hemorrhoidectomy: A minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of piles.
  • Endoscopic hernia surgery: For the treatment of various types of hernias.
  • Anaesthesia: Most minimal access surgeries at ANS Super Speciality Hospital are conducted under general anaesthesia. However, some procedures may be performed using local anaesthesia.
  • Incision: A small incision is made to insert a camera, which provides enhanced visibility of the surgical area. Additional incisions may be necessary to accommodate other instruments. A device is used through the incision to inflate the area, improving the surgeon's access to the surgical site.
  • Closure: After completing the procedure, the incision is closed using staples and sutures.

The patient might need to schedule a follow-up appointment at the hospital 1-2 weeks after the surgery.
